Art and Science as Parallel and Divergent Ways of Knowing

October 24, 2019 - 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Art and Science as Parallel and Divergent Ways of Knowing

Nowadays, art and science usually get cast as distinct in their interpretations of the world. That was not always the case: Until relatively recently, many, such as Leonardo and Michelangelo, were celebrated as masters of both. The writer Lawrence Weschler, director emeritus of the New York Institute for the Humanities at NYU (where science is seen among the crown jewels of the humanities) offers a fresh view of their interpenetration, with particular reference to the thinking of artists Robert Irwin and David Hockney and a novel interpretation of Rembrandt’s Anatomy Lesson.

In discussion with:

Mark Winston, Professor, SFU Department of Biological Sciences.

Vance Williams, Associate Professor, SFU Department of Chemistry.

Emily O’Brien, Associate Professor, SFU Department of History.
