The 6th annual BC Science Outreach Workshop will be held at Science World at TELUS World of Science. This popular professional development event will focus on innovative experiences, pertinent discussions and a networking forum.
This year, we will explore many aspects of diversity and inclusion in STEAM outreach. Sessions will cover a variety of topics that address gender inclusion, barrier removal, Indigenous engagement and underserved communities.

Constellation of Knowledge: Exploring different ways of knowing through an innovative story-telling experience
Presented Beaty Biodiversity Museum
Musqueam and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum are showcasing an exhibition integrating indigenous perspectives in Vancouver’s natural history museum. We explore the complex web of knowledge that surrounds each species or belonging, centring around the modern creation of a 35 foot sturgeon harpoon. This exhibition layers visual, tactile, auditory, and digitally immersive elements to engage visitors with different abilities, learning styles and levels of digital access, and widen our reach.
Pathways through Partnerships: Achieving Diversity in STEM
Presented by Engineers and Geoscientists BC
An engaging discussion of the points of STEM career entry and the impact that partnerships can have to promote diversity in STEM from early education to career. Every interaction with an individual is a chance to engage them, introduce them to opportunities, and broaden their way of thinking; show them opportunities they might not know existed.
Hear from three groups along the STEM learning and career path that work in collaboration to further the advancement of women and underrepresented groups in this field from exploration to career development.
Removing Barriers: How can we make our institutions more inclusive and welcoming to our staff, volunteers and the diverse audiences we serve as community hubs?
Presented by Science World & Applied Science Technologists & Technicians BC
This lively and interactive workshop encourages participants to explore how their identity is informed by privilege and build knowledge to understand the terms diversity and inclusion. Participants will learn to recognize what privilege looks and feels like by reflecting on the dimensions of diversity. Presenters will share their experience in creating welcoming spaces for staff and visitors with different abilities.
Girls and Digital Skills
Presented by ACTUA & Science Venture
A deep dive on high impact digital skills programs that target girls and young women, with boys and male instructors as allies taking in the full extent of program design, including marketing, parent engagement, creating girl-led content, partnerships, revenue and more. Ideal for representatives of programs that are taking a careful look their gender-based programming in the context of all programming.
Science On Stage: Theatrical Techniques for Maximum Impact
Presented by Science World
Explore how to use theatrical techniques involving emotion, character, physicality, and verbal variety to enhance the anticipation, excitement and engagement in presenting science demonstrations. Brian has been leading the Science World demonstration team for over 10 years and will showcase some of the techniques we use in helping our staff find their own voice for maximum impact.
STEAM Support at Home: Empowering Parents and Role Models of Girls
Presented by Science Al!ve, Simon Fraser University
Explores strategies to engage parents and other role models of girls in discussions on effective methods to support girls in STEM. We will share our experiences running parent sessions during outreach workshops and integrating parents into classroom activities. We will then facilitate a knowledge share and directed discussion with the group about the benefits and challenges of involving adult family members in outreach events.

Keynote Speaker
Cicely Belle Blain is an activist, writer and consultant; they are one of Vancouver’s fifty most influential people of 2018, as awarded by Vancouver Magazine, an award-winning co-founder of Black Lives Matter, Vancouver and a professional speaker with notable engagements including the United Nations Summit and the Black Canadian Studies Association conference. Professionally, Cicely Belle is the CEO of a social justice-informed diversity and inclusion consulting company with clients across North America, Europe and Asia. Their work is informed by their professional and academic background at the University of British Columbia and their lived experience as a Black, queer artist, a community builder, an intersectional feminist and a Black liberation activist. Cicely Belle’s writing has appeared in Daily Xtra, The Body is Not an Apology, From the Root, DIVA, Herizons and more.
Kristin Bower
Keynote Speaker
An award-winning diversity and inclusion professional, Kristin brings her two decades of experience to a wide variety of clients through her Diversity & Inclusion consulting business, Kristin Bower Consulting. She has studied Human Resources Management at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and Diversity & Inclusion at the University of British Columbia.
Kristin has led work in the areas of diversity & inclusion strategy development, intercultural competency and unconscious bias training, workplace culture, Reconciliation and Indigenous history, disability and inclusive employment programs and mental health awareness and training.
Kristin is a frequent speaker at conferences and in workplaces on the topics of diversity and inclusion and mental health and her writing has been published in Visions magazine and the Good Money blog among other publications and she has been featured in the Globe and Mail. An outspoken advocate for deeper awareness of mental health issues, she also writes a blog called Adventures of a Survivor and often includes posts with a human resources and inclusion perspective.
