Gairdner Global Perspectives Panel: COVID-19 – The Canadian Research Response
June 29, 2020 - 8:00 am - 10:00 am
There has been an unprecedented global scientific response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many scientists have rapidly changed their research directions to help accelerate our understanding of the virus, to search for new treatments, to develop effective vaccines and to rapidly implement clinical trials. The societal and public health impacts of the pandemic need to be assessed and interventions tested.
The Gairdner Foundation seeks to highlight and celebrate the importance of rigorous science and global collaboration in solving major global health issues. The Canadian government and other funders of research have recently invested considerable funding into major COVID-19 research initiatives in Canada that are contributing to the international efforts to alleviate the pandemic challenge. This panel will explore some of these Canadian initiatives with the leaders involved. The panel will also discuss the importance of Open Science and international collaboration in promoting equitable access to public health interventions and therapies.
