Science Slam and Beaty Museum Present: An Extra Day of Science

February 29, 2020 - 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Science slam feb
On February 29, join Science Slam Vancouver and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum to celebrate an extra day of science!

About this Event

Leaping lizards! On February 29, join Science Slam Vancouver and the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at the Fox Cabaret to celebrate the leap day, or as we’re calling it, ‘an extra day of science’. To celebrate this special day, we’ve handpicked a selection of fantastic talks about rare, unusual, misunderstood, overlooked, or cyclical events.

For those of you who have never experienced the wonder of Science Slam, welcome! This is Vancouver’s most epic science showdown. Sit back, relax, and watch as our competitors battle to achieve science communication fame and glory.

What exactly is a science slam? Based on the format of a poetry slam, a science slam is a competition where speakers gather to share their science with you – the audience. Competitors have five minutes to present on any science topic without the use of a slideshow and are judged based on communication skills, audience impact and scientific content. Props and creative presentation styles are encouraged!

Whether you’re a researcher, student, educator, artist, or communicator, our stage is open to you. If you’ve got a science topic you’re researching, or just a topic you’re excited about, send in an application! If you’re not sure about an idea, just ask.

Science Slam is excited to collaborate with the Beaty Biodiversity Museum to host this event. Vancouver’s natural history museum, the Beaty Museum holds UBC’s spectacular biological collections. The museum has 20,000 square feet of exhibits with two million treasured specimens, including a 26-metre-long blue whale skeleton suspended in the atrium, dinosaur trackways from BC’s early Cretaceous period, and myriad fossils, mammals, reptiles, and plants from around our region and across the planet.

Doors open at 7pm, event begins at 7:30pm. General admission $12, first 30 tickets sold get the $10 early nerd rate!

We’ll see you there!

Accessibility Notes:

This event takes place on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Squamish, Musqueam, and Tsleil Waututh nations, and we are grateful for the opportunity to meet, learn, and connect on this land. The Beaty Biodiversity Museum is located on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people and thanks the Musqueam for their ongoing partnership with the museum in furthering our understanding of culturally diverse ways of knowing our world.

Science Slams are open, respectful, and inclusive event. If you have any questions or concerns around accessibility, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
