Vancouver STEMminist Book Club Reads “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren

July 12, 2020 - 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

In our seventh meeting of the Vancouver STEMminist book club, we will be reading “Lab Girl” by Hope Jahren. We also have our very first guest host, Cecilia Sierra (Twitter @psicsierra), who will be leading our discussion on this book!! We will meet again on Zoom since our last meeting went well using this platform. Future events will be in person or on Zoom depending on the availability of space and safety considerations.

We will do a quick overview of the book at the beginning of the session followed by a deeper discussion. It is suggested to read the book, but we welcome you to attend and contribute to the discussion either way. All voices and perspectives are welcomed.

“Lab Girl” is available in book, and audiobook options. Hopefully, copies will be available from the VPL pending their staged re-opening.

Next Book September 2020: Radium Girls, by Kate Moore (A new movie was just released!)

FAQs

About the STEMminist Book Club Vancouver chapter:

The plan is to mirror the STEMminist Bookclub that was started in Australia by Dr. Caroline Ford (@DrCFord). We will aim to read one book every two months followed by an in-person meeting here in Vancouver, BC. You are also able to contribute to the discussion online on twitter @stemminist / #stemministbc (we don’t always read the same book as the online discussion).

If you are interested in the contributions of women to science, learning more about the history of science, and want to talk about some of the issues and stories brought up in the books this is the book club for you!
