Vancouver STEMminist Book Club Reads “Radium Girls” by Kate Moore

December 6, 2020 - 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Radium Girls
In our 9th meeting of the Vancouver STEMmist Book Club we will be meeting virtually to discuss all things Radium Girls.

About this Event

### We will meet online using Zoom ### Link to be sent to registrants closer to the date. ###

In our 9th meeting of the Vancouver STEMminist book club, we will be reading “Radium Girls: The dark story of America’s Shining Women” by Kate Moore. At the time, the dangers of radiation were still unknown. This book cronicals the stories of women who painted the glowing molecule, radium, onto watch dials. Their mysterious illnesses lead to a notable battler for workers rights in the early 20th century.

Come join our conversation and learn with us!

We will do a quick overview of the book at the beginning of the session followed by a deeper discussion. It is suggested to read the book, but we welcome you to attend and contribute to the discussion either way. Not a scientist? Not a woman? No worries! All voices, perspectives, and listeners are welcomed.

We will meet again on Zoom since our last meetings went well using this platform. Future events will be in person or on Zoom depending on the availability of space and safety considerations.

“Radium Girls” is available in book (hardcover and softcover), ebook, and audiobook options. Copies are likely available at your local library. Vancouver Public Library has all version available to borrow.

The new Radium Girls movie will be available October 23rd to stream online between (no affiliation).

Next Book January 2021: The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter, also check out her CBC Gem TV Show free to all in Canada.

FAQs

About the STEMminist Book Club Vancouver chapter:

The plan is to mirror the STEMminist Bookclub that was started in Australia by Dr.  Caroline Ford (@DrCFord). We will aim to read one book every two months followed by an in-person meeting here in Vancouver, BC. You are also able to contribute to the discussion online on twitter @stemminist / #stemministbc (we don’t always read the same book as the online discussion).

If you are interested in the contributions of women to science, learning more about the history of science, and want to talk about some of the issues and stories brought up in the books this is the book club for you!

Sponsorship:

** SCWIST has made a comitment to sponosor upcoming Vancouver STEMminist Book Club events. Attend a SCWIST event and you may be a lucky recipient of one of our up-coming books. **
