JOB SUMMARY

Have the responsibility of the receiving and processing of human samples with respect to ongoing clinical trials and studies.

ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS

The candidate will be directly supervised by research technicians. He/she will be expected to have strong organizational skills and bench laboratory skills and be able to perform a variety of different laboratory tasks. The applicant will have access to bench space whereby they can conduct the necessary analysis. Lighting is sufficient in all areas. All work will be done indoors. Hazards include working with handling of unknown blood samples. A lab coat and goggles will be worn when necessary and access to safety hoods provided.

WORK PERFORMED

Technical:

·         Receive, log, process and store clinical (blood, and sputum) samples.

·         Inventory archived samples.

·         Know how to use different platforms of database entry.

·         Perform other duties as required.

CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR

All work will be subject to review of the Laboratory Manager and the research technicians. In most cases if error occurs, it would necessitate in loss of clinical samples.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives instructions only on matters that depart significantly from standard procedures and policy. The candidate is expected to work independently once general guidance is received from the research technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS

High School graduation. Minimum of 1 year of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of hazards of blood, radioactive substances and hazardous chemicals an asset. Immunization against Hepatitis B. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Organizational skills are necessary and demonstrated ability to complete assignments in a timely manner to meet departmental requirements. Ability to work effectively independently, once trained. Skills with computer databases and graphics would be beneficial. Good sense of humor a must.
