A Research Assistant/Technician position to assist in research projects to support ongoing NIH- and CIHR-funded research on flu and HIV vaccine design. Candidates will be interviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
Most of the work will involve a variety of molecular biology, biochemistry and immunology techniques with emphasis on gene cloning and mutagenesis, mammalian cell culture, protein purification and multicolor flow cytometry but also including ELISAs and various bioassays. The main project will be to assist in furthering projects to elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies to key target sites on the envelope spikes of flu and HIV-1.
Some techniques to be used will be relatively new to the lab and thus a high level of attention to detail, accuracy and repeatability as well as problem solving and troubleshooting skills are required. The incumbent is therefore expected to assist in the design of experiments if needed and present data to other lab members and the Principal Investigator (in person or lab meetings). More generally, the incumbent is expected to assist in the overall care, maintenance and organization of lab supplies, equipment and samples, and maintain meticulous records of work performed. Assistance with coordinating, monitoring and ensuring the implementation and enforcement of laboratory safety rules and procedures is also expected.
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline or Graduation from a technical college or institute. A Master’s degree in a related discipline (immunology, cell biology) would be preferred. Minimum of 3 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Co-op work experience would be an asset.
– Extensive knowledge of cell culture techniques is required.
– Extensive experience with immunological techniques is required (in particular flow cytometry)
– High level of attention to detail is required.
– Excellent problem solving and trouble shooting skills are required.
– Effective interpersonal and organizational skills are required, as is a good oral and written English.
– Must have the ability to work independently with minimum supervision and to work well with others.
– Effective oral and written communication and organizational skills.
– Demonstrable ability to work independently and within a team environment.
– The ability to work within a flexible schedule including some weekends, evenings or early mornings is required.
– Comfortable working hands-on with human and animal blood products (serum, tissue).
– Demonstrated ability to properly record, calculate,plot and display experimental results using graphical computer software
