Simon Fraser University

Position Summary

Research in the laboratory of Dr. Ralph Pantophlet is focused on vaccine immunology, in particular the development of novel vaccines and potential therapeutics for HIV, influenza and other viruses of biomedical importance ( A central part of this work involves investigating the interaction of anti-viral antibodies and their somatic precursors with cognate epitopes, dissecting B and T cell responses to prospective ‘designer’ vaccine immunogens, and probing novel immunization models and platforms. The Pantophlet lab is seeking to fill a key Research Assistant position to support ongoing NIH- and CIHR-funded research. The position is available starting March 15 and candidates will be interviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

Basic Qualifications

Interested individuals must have, at minimum, a Master’s (MSc) degree in Immunology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a closely related discipline plus at least 3 years of related hands-on laboratory experience. Experience and proficiency must include routine mammalian tissue culture (including transfection and recombinant protein expression), molecular biology techniques (including PCR, gene cloning, and plasmid purification), and immunochemical analyses (including affinity chromatography, SDS-PAGE, and immunoblotting). The candidate must be comfortable working hands-on with human and animal blood products (serum, tissue).

Preferred Candidate

The preferred candidate must have all qualifications listed above plus routine practical experience with flow cytometry (assay set up and data analysis) and cell-based gene reporter assays. Additional experience with recombinant antibody display methodology, such as on yeast or phage, or novel immunoassays would be advantageous.

All candidates must have a demonstrated ability to properly record, calculate and plot experimental results using software such as GraphPad Prism and demonstrable ability to work efficiently, thoughtfully and relatively independent.

All qualified applicants are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and Canadian work permit holders will be given higher priority in general.
